National Population Health Survey

Survey Overview

The National Population Health Survey (NPHS) and the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY) are two major Canadian surveys completed by Statistics Canada that began in 1994/95.

In order to reduce collection costs and respondent burden, these two longitudinal surveys have been integrated for the Yukon and the Northwest Territories. Collection for these two surveys in Northwest Territories is completed by the NWT Bureau of Statistics on behalf of Statistics Canada.

The National Population Health Survey (NPHS) is the first national longitudinal survey on the health of Canadians and will collect health information over a twenty-year period for selected individuals. The objective of the NPHS is to obtain ongoing information on health status and factors affecting health, and on the use of health services. The survey will also provide information on changes in people's health over time. Information available from the survey includes:

There were approximately 750 respondents to the 1994/95 NPHS for Northwest Territories and Nunavut. These respondents were re-contacted in 1996/97 and the results of that survey should be available shortly. In 1998/99 new respondents were added to the survey to ensure a representative sample. The sample size for the 1998/99 cycle was increased to 1,000 respondents in total, or about 500 for each new territory. Data is collected using telephone interviews in larger communities and face-to-face interviews in smaller communities.
